Hi this is Manu from Kamafari Surfcamps.
We finally got around to write up a little and hopefully informative blog post for our regular and future guests as well as anybody who is much interested to know which main airlines flying to Bali still charge fees and which take surfboard equipment for free.
Based on from where most of our regular guests depart their journey to Bali, below we have analysed the main airlines flying to Bali and whether these airlines still charge surfboard fees on their flights or not. As concluded it seems that except a few airlines most allow you to check in your surfboard bags under their regular baggage allowance which is most standard 23kg sometimes even 32kg.
In the last five years I often flew to Indonesia, minimum once a year sometimes twice. From my experience regarding flight prices you will definitely better off flying into Kuala Lumpur and from there taking a separate flight with Air Asia to Bali. If you go via Jakarta you may pay up to $100US more for your flights.
Although Air Asia charges a minimal fee for surfboards, which they call ‘Sports Equipment’ add ons, this fee for your surfboard is roughly only $15-20 US one way for a 25kg sports equipment add on.
Just check your departure location below and see whether from that location, your airline will be charging you a fee for your surfboards or not.
In case we have not added your departure location and you’d like to see it here – please let us know we’re happy add it in. Since airline policies are subject to change we will update this post every 3 months – so all info here is fresh and up to date.
Enjoy and hope you have a great surf trip to Bali or anywhere in Indo.
